Your Electrical Checklist for Fall
ElectricFor most, the “honey-do” list involves all seasons. Today, we’re here to share four electrical to-do’s you might want to add for fall.
1. Install a Generator
As we head into winter, the last thing you want is for a winter storm to knock out the power and leave you and your family freezing. Frozen and burst pipes could cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to your home. A generator will keep you and your family comfortable year-round (think summer storms knocking out your power) and prevent major damage.
2. Panel Upgrade
Are your lights flickering more often? Breakers tripping? Panel older than 25 years? If any of these are true, you might want to consider upgrading your panel, especially with the holiday season coming up and the increased use of electricity the season brings.
3. Timers for Lights
While this can be especially useful for the holiday season, timers are beneficial year-round. Setting a timer for your lights will help conserve energy and electricity when you’re on vacation or ensure you don’t have to remember to turn the lights off again. Plus, you can control the schedules from an app on your phone.
4. Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Studies show that 60% of people don’t test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly. Don’t be that 60%. These devices have expiration dates – 10 years for smoke detectors, five years for carbon monoxide detectors, and five years for combo units. If you’re unsure if your unit is expired and you notice it’s yellowed, that’s probably a good indication it’s time for a new one.
