Four Common Reasons Why Your Sewer Line Is Clogged

If you’ve ever dealt with slow drains, unusual noises, or a strong sewer smell, you may have a blockage in your sewer line. When your sewer line becomes clogged, it can lead to costly problems down the road if left unaddressed.

Understanding what causes sewer clogs can help you prevent major issues. In this blog, we’re breaking down four of the most common causes.

Reason #1: Tree root intrusion

One of the most common causes of sewer line blockages is the intrusion of tree roots. When tree roots grow underground, they’re looking for moisture and nutrients, which can be found in your sewer line.

Any cracks or loose joints in your line make it easier for tree roots to enter. Once inside, they may continue to grow through your pipe. Overgrown tree roots can restrict water flow and cause blockages. The extent of damage depends on several factors, including the age of your pipe, the material used, and how far the roots have grown.

Since it’s hard to predict root growth underground, many homeowners don’t realize there’s a problem until a blockage has already formed.

Reason #2: Grease buildup

Another cause of blockages in your sewer line is grease buildup. When you pour fats, oils, and grease down the drain, they can cause significant issues with your line. Once they start to solidify, they may stick to the walls of the pipe. Over time, more buildup can lead to sewer system issues. In some cases, it may be so severe that the water flow is obstructed completely, causing sewage to back up into the home.

In more serious situations, these blockages can result in property damage and expensive repairs. Being aware of what goes down your drain can help homeowners avoid costly plumbing issues.

Reason #3: Flushing the wrong items

Flushing the wrong items down the toilet can also cause issues with your sewer line. You should always be careful about what you flush. Even wipes and other products labeled as “flushable” or biodegradable can accumulate in your sewer line, restricting water flow and causing sewer problems.

Toilet paper is designed to break down in water, while wipes and other products are made of materials that don’t dissolve as well. These materials, combined with grease buildup, can cause obstructed pipes and increase the risk of backups.

Taking small precautions when flushing can help homeowners avoid plumbing problems.

Reason #4: An aging sewer line

If your plumbing system is older, your sewer line may be more prone to clogs. Over time, the constant exposure to moisture, sewage, and soil conditions can cause pipes to deteriorate. Depending on the materials used, this wear and tear may make it easier for debris to catch and accumulate in the pipe.

In more severe cases, aging pipes may develop minor cracks or joint separations. Homes with aging sewer lines may be more vulnerable to blockages, increasing the need for sewer line repairs.

Warning signs of a clogged sewer line

While awareness of the causes of sewer clogs is important, it’s equally important to recognize the warning signs. Some common signs include:

  • Slow drainage
  • Water is backing up into plumbing fixtures like toilets and tubs
  • Unusual odors
  • Gurgling noises coming from your drains

If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to have your sewer line inspected by Black Diamond Plumbing & Mechanical.
